The Crucible

by ARTHUR MILLER

ABOUT THE PROJECT.

For this Hanover Theatre Rep production, we transformed the BrickBox Theater into Salem jail, allowing our all-female cast of "witches" to tell the story of their town's descent into madness. I came to helm this production after a long love affair with the play: from discovering it in eighth grade, to playing Abigail at Trinity Rep, to assisting Eric Tucker on the Bedlam production, to workshopping the all-female concept with an experimental staged reading. The result of all that research was a show of which my team and I were immensely proud. Fearless, furious, and darkly funny throughout, this take on Miller's classic lay bare its scarily relevant themes by placing the entirety of the storytelling in womens’ hands.
There's a rawness and vulnerability in Proctor and Williams, and in all the characters, that gives this interpretation of The Crucible its distinction, allowing the audience member an intimate glimpse into each one's heart as well as mind.

The Glass Menagerie

by TENNESSEE WILLIAMS

ABOUT THE PROJECT.

I directed and produced Williams's The Glass Menagerie for The Hanover Theatre Repertory, where I currently serve as Artistic Director. I found my way into the "memory play" structure through the character of Tom, which I double cast with an older actor (Steven Barkhimer) to carry the monologues and a younger actor (Brad Goren-Wilson) to carry the scenes. Meri Stypinski, Cheryl McMahon and Luis Rivera Figueroa rounded out an extraordinary ensemble, which reminded me and our audience just how far brilliant, disciplined actors can take us with rigorous, specific, moment-to-moment work, especially when we lean into finding the love and playing up the humor.
This is great professional theatre that would stand up in any city in America.

Macbeth

by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

ABOUT THE PROJECT.

I had an absolutely incredible team for this project, which I produced and directed for The Hanover Theatre Repertory, where I currently serve as Artistic Director. We had a blast serving up post-apocalyptic vibes in this 90-minute take on the Scottish Play, staged in the BrickBox Theater at the Jean McDonough Arts Center.
As a DEIB counselor to THT Rep, I have seen Livy practice inclusive leadership by listening curiously and mindfully planning for diverse casting. They work hard to make sure that the stage feels safe so all actors can thrive.

Associate Director, Dr. Kathryn Moncrief.  Fight Director, Robert St. Laurence.  Costume Design, Jessica Beyer.  Lighting Design, Brenda Shepard.  Properties, Sarah MacIntyre.  Stage Management, Jane Siebels and Samantha Knox.  Photography, Mike Hendrickson.

The Edgar Allan Poe Double Header
The Tell-Tale Heart and The Cask of Amontillado

ABOUT THE PROJECT.

I originally created this 60-minute solo show in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, performing it for socially-distant audiences of just 20 people. It became one of the first and only shows in the country approved by Actors' Equity Association for indoor performance in the fall of 2020. Since then, The Edgar Allan Poe Double Header has been performed for fully seated audiences in both the BrickBox Theater at the Jean McDonough Arts Center and on the mainstage of The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts. At turns dark and darkly funny, the show has become a perennial favorite in Worcester, delighting student and general audiences alike.
Scanlon vividly brings to life multiple characters, and her brilliant portrayals are enhanced by the stellar work of the creative team. Scanlon wears numerous hats in this production (she directed herself, not an easy assignment), and never falters.

Julius Caesar

by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

ABOUT THE PROJECT.

I produced, directed and acted the role of Antonia (Marc Antony) in this outdoor production, which played free and open to the public on the Worcester Common at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Presented by The Hanover Theatre Repertory in partnership with the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District and the City of Worcester.
While working with Livy, what stands out most is that their direction feels like permission-giving. It is one of the greatest gifts a director can give to an actor.

Dark Room

World Premiere by GEORGE BRANT

ABOUT THE PROJECT.

I produced, helped develop, and directed this one-of-a-kind world premiere featuring twenty-two women, ten vignettes, and a silent protagonist.  Presented by Bridge Repertory Theater. Inspired by the life, death and photography of Francesca Woodman.

Elliot Norton Award, Outstanding Director (Small Theatre)
In a time of theatrical scarcity, Livy's production of Dark Room had an epic and remarkably generous vision.  Evocative, unsettling, and endlessly inventive... an overwhelming dream so persuasive it became your own.  I mean every word -- it was magnificent. (And you can quote that, too!)

Mrs. Packard

by EMILY MANN

ABOUT THE PROJECT.

Back when I sported long locks, I co-produced and acted the titular role on this unforgettable project, written by an American Theatre legend and inspired by the true-life story of Elizabeth Packard. Presented by Bridge Repertory Theater and Playhouse Creatures Theatre Company.  Directed by Emily Ranii.

IRNE Award, Best Actress (Small Theatre)
To see this play so fully embodied in this space, at this moment in time, makes me believe that having dedicated my life to telling the stories of people who have been silenced, matters. Moment to moment, I learned something new about the play I thought I knew really well.

The Vagina Monologues

Documentary play by EVE ENSLER

ABOUT THE PROJECT.

I directed this fully-realized, raw production with five student actors on a budget of $200. I did not choose the text or the cast. To date, it remains one of my most treasured projects. Presented by the Boston University School of Theater.
